Downtown Dogs and Labradors Are #1

There are a lot of dog owners downtown shuffling with their pets to Court Square, Tom Lee, Greenbelt Park, Confederate Park, The Bluff Walk and every lot and strip of grass in between. You make a real commitment when you live downtown and make the decision to be a dog owner. Many people living downtown don't have yards so walks are necessary and no matter what the weather is you have to brave it early in the morning and late at night. Stayed out late at the bar and feel like going home and getting straight to bed? Forget it. Wake up in the morning and feel sick? Too bad, Spot has to go outside. It's pouring rain but the last time you walked the dog was 8 hours ago. Get the umbrella. But the little buggers are worth it, at least that's what Poppy tells me. Poppy is a chow-lab mix and a Pisces. Her hobbies include trying to kill squirrels (and in some cases, to my horror, actually killing squirrels), eating chicken bones and rib bones she finds on Main Street, barking at anything she hears in the hallway of my building, napping, compulsively licking people and over compensating for not having thumbs by opening all my lower kitchen drawers with her mouth while I'm at work. What's not to love?

The American Kennel Club's 2008 List of the Most Popular Dogs in the U.S. :
1.
Labrador Retriever (good Lord, this makes 18 years in a row)
2.
Yorkshire Terrier
3.
German Shepherd Dog
4.
Golden Retriever
5.
Beagle
6.
Boxer
7.
Dachshund
8.
Bulldog
9.
Poodle
10.
Shih Tzu

Oh, nice post!! I am so not cool enough to live downtown bc of my dogs!! I'm so lazy if I didnt have a back yard I just dont know what I'd do! Cheers to you and all the downtown dog owners. My boys cant make that AKC list bc they arent a recognized breed :( But Dogster sure has them in their top 10!

Kembree,
I did not intend to insinuate people who don't live downtown don't walk their dogs or that being a dog owner, wherever you live, is not a big commitment. Sometimes tone/intention does not come across in written word.

Beagles should be at the top of that list. :)

No, no, I know most of you HAVE to walk them, I'm too lazy not to have a back yard ;) I'm terrible, I volunteer at the Humane Society and walk those dogs and barely walk my own!

Ah - I'm with you now! A long time ago, I used to walk dogs at the Humane Society too, when they were on Central. Poppy came from there and she's been the best dog.

Aww, one of mine came from there too, the white one Lane, I've been volunteering since they have been at Shelby Farms, we would love to have you back as a volunteer :) Love all your information on your blog too btw...

Poppy's brother, Droppy, beleives your information about the most popular dogs in incorrect. Being a bassett hound, he studies quite a bit and has a nose for lots of information. He beleives he read that Bassett Hounds were the most popular dog.
