Oliver-Finnie, Cold Storage and The Pier is Closed
I noticed tonight that the Pier Restaurant on Wagner has closed. Apparently it's been closed for a couple of weeks. It had been operating since 1977. I was just commenting to a friend a while back about how surprising it was that the Pier was still open. I myself had not been there in at least 15 years, maybe longer. I remember it being a top choice for prom night dinners when I was in high school. This was just about the only restaurant downtown with a river view. Oliver-Finnie Grocers operated at this location until a fire destroyed the building 1906. It was re-built by Memphis Cold Storage Company to house their operations and that is the building standing today. Incidentally, if you have any memories or mementos of Oliver-Finnie Grocers, they are wanted at: oliverfinnie.com.

Very sad to see another local downtown business close. It was definitely the prom dinner of choice. We went there for mine! I kept meaning to go back, but never actually made it.
Rebecca,
Same here. It's just a place I never even thought about. I guess when something has been around for so long we take it for granted.But33 years is as good a run as any restaurant anywhere can hope to expect. Tavern on the Green in NYC recently closed it's doors after 75 years!
I was just talking about this place a few days ago and how much I wanted to go! I hadn't been in 3 years, but it was always one of my favorite places to go. That really hurts my feelings.
